Why chip with a wedge?

From the side of the green, why do most less-skilled players “chip” with a wedge, seeking to fly the ball up to nearer the hole? Why play a shot that requires a lot of “execution skill” vs a 7-iron bump and run that is easier to play more consistently?

Could it be that most golfers haven’t practiced a bump and run with a club like the #7 iron? Could it be that most don’t know how to set up to be consistent with the most control over this shot? Could it be as simple as visualization?

Try this for yourself at a practice green. Take one practice with each of a 3-wood (yes, try a bump and run with a 3-wood), 7-iron, and pitching wedge from the greenside and then …

From the same starting point, play 3 shots with each of those clubs at the same target.”
