Where lie angle becomes critical

Lie angle has a greater impact on launch direction with higher lofted clubs.

Lie angle 2° too flat

Lie angle 2° too flat

In the example above, if the lie angle on your #5 iron and your PW are both 2° too flat, you’re more likely to lose the ball further right on your PW shot than on your #5 iron shot. Of course, we want your lie angle to be correct throughout your bag, but it’s especially important on your higher lofted, scoring clubs.

No standards for lie angle

Off-the-shelf purchases for any club, but especially wedges, make even less sense when you consider that there are no standards for lie angles in the golf industry. In the example below, you could lose your wedge shot left because manufacturer A’s ‘standard’ lie angle is too upright for you whereas Manufacturer B’s ‘standard’ for the same loft wedge is just right.

Same golfer, same swing. Different wedge manufacturers, different outcomes.
