What’s next from the bunker?

Think back to the last time you were in a greenside bunker. As you walked in, what were you thinking?

“I wasn’t thinking, I was just hoping”

“What’s the easiest way to get this out and on the green anywhere"

“I know how to play this shot, no worries, trust my technique”

“Where do I land this to get it close and get up and down”

Whichever thought it was, it probably reflects your own self-assessment of your competence. What do you need to do to get to the next level of thinking?

There’s a fundamental technique to playing a bunker shot (and especially how to engage and use the bounce to make this an easier shot to play). And then there’s the technique to control how the ball will come out and how far it will travel. And then there’s the way to tackle the different challenges your lie and position in the bunker presents you with. These are all levels of competence or skill you can develop.

Learning this skill is fun

Whatever your level of skill in the bunker, going to the next level is an accomplishment to be proud of. It’s also probably a skill your peers will note. It also changes the way you think on a golf course. Most importantly it means less chance of a round being ruined or spoiled.
