The key to becoming mentally tough is maintaining a strong mind-body connection. A great way to do this is to improve your meta awareness so you can narrow your focus in pressure situations.
So what is “meta awareness”? It’s simply the mind’s ability to observe itself.
There are three sensory channels through which meta awareness takes place: touch, sight and hearing.
Heightened meta awareness will help you better recognise your psychological state at a given moment and, should you be a state of stress for example, allow you to take actions to center yourself.
A simple way of practicing meta awareness is by placing your hands on a golf club and stretching the club out in front of you. Hinge and unhinge your wrists focusing as far as possible just on the sensation you’re experiencing through your left wrist.
From there, make a slow motion practice swing, trying to replicate this state of mind by focusing your attention as far as possible only on the sensation you’re experiencing through your left wrist.
Practice this enough and when it comes to the crunch in a competitive setting, you’ll be able to train your focus solely on your intended target.
We’ll help you train yourself to block out all distractions using meta awareness.
