If you’re looking to break 85 or even 80,
then you need to start
a journey of improvement.
A journey built around 4 principles:

Golf is a game of misses

We search for perfection on every shot. We very rarely find it. We might be left or right of our aim or short (even sometimes long).

Our misses are more dramatic the longer the club. With our shorter clubs, the width of our misses will be much less. Effectively, you have a cone of misses.

Decision making (or game management) is important on every shot. It’s much more about, “where don’t I want to miss?" rather than "where is the flag or the middle of the fairway?”

A good Break 85 or Break 80 program includes time on the course. It’s less about technique and more about game management. Thought is required, starting on every tee-box. Start with: “how do I avoid a double-bogey?”

DISTANCE DOES MATTER

Almost all golfers shooting higher than 85 are at a disadvantage after their tee shot vs a lower handicap golfer. They’re 20, 30 or even more yards behind. That makes the 2nd shot so much longer and more difficult with a much larger “miss” threat.

There are always quick distance wins on the coaching tee without the need to increase effort or hand speed. One is increasing club head speed by improving the kinetic sequence on the downswing. Remember each mph of club head speed is 2mph of ball speed and 4 yards further down the fairway.

The second is improving the launch. A better combination of dynamic launch angle and spin rate on the golf ball will create a much longer ball flight.

CHANGE YOUR PRIORITY

On the green, we need to shift the priority on most putts from the “line” to the “speed required”. Improving your ability to judge length and speed required and then get within 3 feet of every target distance saves 2 or 3 strokes a round for most golfers.

Understanding how to control the speed of your putt with your backswing and follow through is a fundamental that most golfers try and learn by discovery. There’s an established science to this.

THE SAME WITH PITCH SHOTS

We’d recommend that every golfer plays the occasional 9-hole round of golf where every hole is between 40 and 70 yards. Try it. What did you score?

It should be 27 or less. Mastering the pitch shot is a skill that every golfer should set out to accomplish. For anyone looking to frighten 80, it’s a fundamental.

IF YOU WANT TO BREAK 85

If lowering your scorecard to below 85 or 80 is an ambition you’d like to embrace then

As well as improving your golf swing, expect to become longer and more consistent off the tee, to achieve mastery over shots from 70 yards in, to take 3-putts off your scorecard, and to reduce the number of ugly double-bogeys with better game management.
